Taken in the early 1970s in Dwight’s Beach Concession, from left to right, are Jack and Dwight Clapp. Dwight and his wife, Fae, started the business in 1932, made lots of hamburgers, and invented his famous “cheese strips” with sauce. Dwight’s Drive-In opened at Beach Boulevard and PCH in 1949, and Jack took over Dwight’s. Then in 1958, Jack founded Jack’s Beach Concession, and later in 1975, his son Dave took it over—truly a family beach business.

In 1970, the lifeguard truck with rescue paddleboard parks on the “Apron” in front of HQ. Stationed to the left in the building was the first-aid room guard ready to accept walk-in medical aids or assist the transport of patients to an ambulance or paramedics. During large or mass rescues in the water, the first-aid room guard would leave the building to assist.
